A ONE NIGHT STAND PART 4: MINGLE DJ'S

SHAWN SOMMERS

Spinning wax in clubs and at parties for over 15 years, Shawn has played alongside many local, national and international DJ's including: DJ Dan, Robbie Hardkiss, Keoki, Mark Farina, John Kelly, Rob Base & DJ Ez Rock, Ed Rush, Jumpin' Jack Frost, and more. One of the founders of The Groove Factory (celebrating it's 11th anniversary this year), Shawn was also instrumental in many of Winnipeg's early "warehouse parties", namely the legendary "Panic" parties at 123 Princess.

Still one to collect and supply records to other jocks locally, he plays out from time to time. For this New Years event, he hopes you'll be bouncing with him!

OXIDE

Oxide originates from Portage La Prairie and now resides in the funkier side of the Peg. After growing up in a military family he needed to break free and spread his love for house music by going on tour with the car crunching monster trucks of the motor sport world. Bigfoot was his favorite, but after years of sleeping in dingy hotels and eating breakfast in nudy bars he came to the realization that it wasn't as glorious as he thought it would be. Back to the Peg! Most of his time is now spent collecting chopsticks from Sushi restaurants, searching for the "Log Driver Song" on vinyl and producing his home grown derty house music. You can catch Oxide's blend of soul moving funky techouse on sHIFT Radio Friday's on 101.5 with Andre Bisseck. www.urbnet.com/djoxide

DISCO KITTY

In spring of 1999, DiscoKitty first got into electronic music by going to Winnipeg clubs and parties where DJ's were the focus. This whole new world of music was very intriguing and exciting to her. At the time, this girl had no idea what the DJ's did up there on the decks, but all she knew was that it sounded fantastic. At the time, djing wasn't something that DiscoKitty wanted to take very far. It was all about having fun and experimenting.

She continued buying records and pursued the house/tech-house sound. It wasn't until summer of 2002, that DiscoKitty decided to take her love of records out and share her mixing with the public. She landed her first gig playing alongside fellow-female DJ Audio Angel and radio co-host on Alter Ego, 101.5 Saturdays 3-4pm.

THE SMOOTHS

Got Basslines? The Smooths has crates of em'. Over the past 4 years this guy has been pushing the breakbeat sounds, giving Winnipeg a wide selection of styles under the breaks genre. If he's not dropping his "Techy FunkBreaks" hes probably tearing apart bassbins with some Savage NuSkool styles! Over the past year he has also started writing his own material, keeping it real with some phat dub beats which he will be laying down for the first time on NYE. For this event The Smooths will teaming up with  another one of Winnipegs breakbeat-tough guys, Dj Domain. Expect a broad selection of choice cuts from these guys, that are sure to rip it up!

PLAIN JANE

Plain Jane (aka Garden Hoe/Brooke Brampton)

is an artist and DJ from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

Her musical tastes range from Detroit style techno, electro, funky breaks and downtempo beats to headbanger rock n roll, 60's ska and punk rock.

She collects knitted, one of a kind, stuffed animals and 80's style leather jackets. She thinks maroon and mint are good colors in combination and she once had her picture taken while firing a gold handgun in Las Vegas.

She likes this photo of herself because it reminds her of Roy Orbison. She has extremely graphic and violent dreams and wishes she had joined the circus in 1982.

RYAN G (aka Bambz)

2004 offered up a busy year for Ryan G.  Taking the oppertunity to spread his wings musically and dig deeper into his passion has led him to a series of offers for global travel pushing the music he loves.  Representing Canada has always been a dream of Ryans, and having it realized makes the years of dedication all worth while.  While maintaining his current representation of house music in a wide spectrum, Ryan is never shy to nod to his roots, Garage.  Having opened for and played alongside the world most respected DJs, humility remains a large part of Ryan's self image - with respect often given to the producers of the music of day and less to the DJs.

This November/December also saw the release of Ryan G's first proper Mix CD (non promo) "Jackhammer" which was recorded live on June 13th, 2004 while performing as a headliner for 1300 people at Winnipeg's Pride festival.  100% of the proceeds of this Mix is being donated to Nine Circles Community Health Centre - and Ryan is thrilled that he has been given the chance to put his talents into play to help others.  So get out there and peek around for the CD - a blend of funky, roof shaking house and tech house.

AUDIO ANGEL

Suzanne's interest in electronic music first began around 1995 which a few years later prompted her to make the move from spectator to DJ. She began DJing November of 2000 and had her first gig at Sugar Sunday's in Saskatoon June 2001 and has never looked back.

Her various styles of Minimal Tech to Tech House have gotten her residencies at the Blue Agave, Pyramid Cabaret and her own club night called Manage et Trois which she co-ran with DJ Oxide With the latter accenting the exposure of local DJs and Live PA's in an atmosphere with no musical boundaries.Today, you will find Suzanne residing at The Empire Cabaret's intimate Oxygen bar, along side Dj Oxide (sHIFT).  "O2 in the Basement" takes place every Friday and Saturday, bringing you the best house and tech-house has to offer.

Alter Ego Radio is the brain child and result of Suzanne's persistence to further the electronic music scene. It is co-hosted by Disco Kitty and the focus is on other local DJs and exposure of selected artists from all over the world.

Being fully aware of the fact that females are indeed the minority within the electronic music scene, Suzanne aims to solidify her place based on the merits of her abilities rather than the novelty of being a minority. With that said she is always willing to help further the influx of female talent.
